Acoustic Sky Funnel Locators

From mid-January 2021, there will be organ pipes in the Temporary Chapel with hoses running from them. They run through the room and reach the outside via a hole in the wall. There, visitors will find large funnels attached to the end of the hoses. Depending on the weather, wind is caught by the funnels and transported via the hoses into the interior to the organ pipes. With a bit of luck and the right timing, the chapel can hear a faint sound from the pipes, triggered by the air current.

From the outside to the inside – Nature and culture In the new exhibition in the temporary chapel, the Zurich artists Christina Hemauer and Roman Keller thus make an intervention in the built space. They connect inside and outside. The aim is to question the understanding of nature and culture. In this way, they lead poetically into an argument about sustainability and human intervention in the environment. Hemauer and Keller call their intervention in the Temporary Chapel Himmelstrichterrichtungshörer. The idea stems from an incident in the artist duo’s Italian studio. They heard the wind howling softly through a ventilation pipe. They affectionately named this sound Spirito Giulio, as their studio is located on Via Giulio Tanini.

Sustainability and environmental degradation Our thinking has separated nature and culture for generations. Culture often takes place indoors and we associate nature with the outdoors. But if we look at nature today, according to Hemauer and Keller, we almost always see a cultural landscape. This has therefore become obsolete and must be rethought. There is currently a discussion about human intervention in nature under the umbrella term “Anthropocene”. The impact of man has become so great and profound through climate change that the appearance of man establishes an age of the earth. The artist duo has been dealing with the impact of humans for many years. This is also the case in their intervention Himmelstrichterrichtungshörer, which they present in the chapel. With a scientific eye, acumen, artistic creativity and a touch of irony, they create an arc between science and art, between man and nature, and between sustainability and environmental destruction.
