The Netto-Zero pilot district is a project of the City of Zurich. Its goal is to work with residents and businesses to identify which ideas and processes effectively support local change – and how they can be transferred to other districts.
Since we are convinced that the climate-related transformation is also a cultural one, we have submitted a proposal for a Kunstklimahalle.

The Kunstklimahalle is a permeable space where nature and culture enter into a dialogue. A wooden slat structure within which art demonstrates that the climate is man-made and an integral part of our society.
INSIDE = OUTSIDE
The Kunstklimahalle creates an interior space for the outside climate. This exhibition venue for art is dedicated to climate-induced transformation and serves as a place for reflection and debate.
CLIMATE = US
The art space makes it tangible that we bear responsibility for climate change. An artist-curator collective with experience in climate art and a connection to the neighborhood is responsible for the organization. The collective is seeking artists for exhibitions between April and September for three years, with the option of extension. The exhibited artworks provide a basis for various educational formats.
CREATIVITY = FUEL
A team of art educators develops a diverse program of events for different target groups. The offerings for children and young people are of particular importance because they will ultimately bear the consequences of our actions. Daycare centers and schools within the pilot area and its immediate vicinity will be actively involved, and a diverse program will be developed for local residents, those working in the neighborhood, and seniors from nearby residential and nursing homes. The focus will be on participatory formats such as guided tours, workshops, discussion series, behind-the-scenes glimpses, peer-to-peer exchanges, and interactive online kits. These will be publicized through digital platforms, social media, posters, etc. Collaboration with the Wiedikon Neighborhood Association and the local history museum is being sought for outreach. Admission is free. Refreshments will be offered in collaboration with the neighborhood and other pilot projects, or via a collection.
ART = EXPERIMENT
The Kunstklimahalle is a wooden slat structure made from timber sourced from the Zurich city forest. The model shown is a preliminary design and discussion paper. The construction will be carried out in collaboration with an architectural firm from Binz and adapted to its location within the neighborhood. Applying a photocatalytic coating allows for investigation into whether significant amounts of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are broken down from the air via the surface (well-documented) and whether methane breakdown is also possible (less well-documented). If a gravel surface is present, it is enriched with olivine gravel, which binds CO2.
